Claret Jug Trophies And Their History
The Claret Jug is actually a sought after trophy presented to the champion winner of the Open Championship. Also referred to as the Golf Champion Trophy, this particular trophy is one of the most sought after and revered trophies in the United Kingdom. In the US, this particular Open Championship is referred to as the British Open. Claret Jug trophies are regarded as the pinnacle of accomplishment for a golfer.
The darker red wine claret color is often categorised as being elite. The heritage of Claret Jug trophies dates back to 1872. This legendary trophy is awarded each year to the winner of the Open golf tournament. The authentic trophy is retained and a replica is given to the champion with his name engraved. When we talk of Claret Jug trophies, their heritage and origin, the tale is incomplete without the mention of the youthful and proficient golf icon Tom Morris. He was often referred to as Young Tom Morris since his father, Sr. Tom Morris or Old Tom Morris, played as a partner.
Because of junior Tom Morris earning the Championship Belt 3 times in a row there was clearly the need of a new trophy to honor this particular world champion for his win. The Challenge Belt was made from rich Moroccan leather festooned with emblems and ornate silver buckles turning it into an invaluable win. The belt was given away to the winner only for 3 wins in a row.
When Tom Morris Junior won 3 times in succession, he became the owner of this one of a kind belt. On his next win in 1872 the three clubs, namely Prestwick, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, donated 10 pounds for a brand new trophy as opposed to another belt. This new trophy was named The Golf Champion Trophy. When Young Tom Morris proceeded the next year to win the championship once more for the 4th time, the trophy was not yet ready to be presented to him, and for that reason he was given a medal instead. Though his was the initial name to be etched on the trophy, the first Claret Jug Trophy was first awarded to Tom Kidd, the 1873 champion. This particular trophy was made by Mackay Cunningham and Company of Edinburgh with 1873 embossed on it.
The respected Claret Jug Trophy appeared twice for a memorial on 5 pound Scottish banknotes that were released by the Royal Bank of Scotland. The first was in the year 2004 when the illustrious Royal and Ancient Golf Club of Scotland celebrated its 250th anniversary and the next time was in 2005, with Jack Nicklaus, the "golden bear" of US golf holding the Jug as a symbol to seal his retirement.
Since 1928, the authentic Claret Jug Trophy has been exhibited at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in St Andrews, Scotland.
